Top Apps for better Mobile Privacy
"Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." - Edward Snowden.
We all know that the apps we have on our mobile know about us better than we do about ourselves. Maybe it’s time for us to take up some steps towards better privacy.
Have you ever wondered that the ads we get on YouTube or Facebook are very familiar with our searches or apps that we installed?
It’s not a coincidence. Major platforms like Google, Facebook or Instagram sell our user data to show ads.
That’s the reason they are free to use. Well, we cannot remove them completely from our lives due to our attachment with them, but we can take some better steps towards privacy.
1. Replacing GOOGLE with STARTPAGE:
Well, we all know that Google is something we all use no matter who we are. It’s the best source for searching for something on the web. But, do you know that google saves our search history infinitely, and uses it to show ads. You might not think it’s a big deal, but trust me it is. So, we are replacing Google with a better, open-source and privacy focused, Startpage Search Engine. Startpage shows the same Google search results, but with better privacy, zero tracking, no ads and anonymity.
2. Replacing CHROME with BRAVE:
Now, let’s replace the Chrome Browser with Brave Browser. It is the best Chrome alternative out there. It’s built on the same Chromium as Chrome thus the interface is the same. The features of Brave Browser are the same as Chrome, and with add-ons like night mode navigation, ad blocking, Brave Rewards etc. The main reason to replace Chrome is that it tracks and records your browsing history and sells it to show you advertising. But, brave has a privacy-focused approach where you have absolutely zero trackers while browsing the web. So, happy browsing.
3. Download JUMBO:
The concept of Jumbo is fairly straightforward: it analyses your online accounts and makes security- and privacy-based recommendations on how to make your accounts and identity more secure. It looks for things like two-factor authentication and ad tracking parameters and can help you configure these things if they aren't already. It can also automatically archive old posts on many social networking sites. These scans occur regularly and automatically, and every option you have activated will be checked and/or run. For example, if you ask the application to remove your Facebook searches or archive old posts on Facebook Messenger, these things will happen automatically without any required interaction. Jumbo Privacy covers a host of services including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Messenger, Google, YouTube, LinkedIn, Amazon, and Alexa. It can also scan the web for data breaches, as well as block in-app and online trackers.
4. Download SPARK MAIL:
Spark is a messaging client that helps you manage your Gmail or other email accounts easily in one place for free without advertisements and tracking. It also has some great features like Smart Inbox, Smart Search, etc. And it’s free to use.
5. Download BURNER GUARD:
Burner Guard is a privacy app that comes with tons of privacy-centred features like Permission Manager, which helps us verify which apps take unwanted permissions and helps you revoke them. Privacy indicator, which helps show a pointer on the screen when an app uses the camera or microphone. Cache Cleaner, which, unlike other cleaner applications actually clears phone cache and Bulk Uninstaller to remove multiple applications at once. And, all these features come at no price of privacy or ads. Also, this app is made in India by BurnerMedia which also owns the YouTube channel Tech Burner.
6. Download ProtonVPN:
ProtonVPN is a privacy-focused VPN application. If you are going to use a VPN, use ProtonVPN. Because this application never saves user data, it is faster than the rest, open-source and ad-free. Compared with other free VPNs in the Play Store or App Store like TurboVPN, etc., this is the best option.
